Swing Dancing "We want you to you know that we attended a wedding a few weeks ago and we had an absolute ball out there on the dance floor. We danced our feet off! You gave us the confidence we needed (along with great "moves") to feel comfortable. Honestly, we laughed & laughed and had so much fun! Did we do everything perfectly? No. Did we have fun? Swing Dancing Swing Dance Demo at Newark Manor April 7 - Nine Swing dancers traveled quite a distance for a Swing demo for the residents of Newark Manor on April 7.
A special treat was the singing of "Goody Goody" by Amy Alquist, who works there as a nutritionist. The entertainment director had these words to say: "On behalf of the Manor folks I would like to thank you and your group for the Swing Dance performance. The residents loved it! They were telling me all about it and stated to me it was wonderful. We rarely get any dancers that pass through here, so we really appreciated your kindness in taking your time to come here. Swing Dancing Friday afternoon March 9 OSHER Arts & Lectures, a learning organization affiliated with RIT for people 50+, sponsored a dance with Dick Otto & His Big Band Music Makers, with a tribute to OSHER Veterans. The organizer invited a group of RSDN Swing dancers to come to liven up the event and encourage others to dance. The nine dancers who participated achieved their mission as it didn't take more than a couple of songs before the dance floor was filled. It was great watching you all dance and you have motivated me, for one, to take some dance lessons."

PAST ARTICLE: Dancers at Thompson DAY of DANCE at Eastview Mall
Swing Dancing RSDN participated at the Thompson Health DAY of DANCE Saturday February 25, at Eastview Mall. This event was to stress the importance of staying active to maintain good health. Dancing was highlighted as an excellent, fun activity to achieve this goal. In addition to our Swing demonstration, there were also ballroom, Jazzercise, Nia, and Zumba demonstrations. About 20 Swing dancers participated in the Swing demo portion. The audience was invited to partner with an experienced dancer, and the participants learned some Swing moves and then danced to a few songs. The organizer of this event commented: "Many people told us that the Swing dancers were their favorite dance of the day. We really appreciate everyone weathering the storm to dance for heart health! We hope you will consider joining us again next year! It was so very nice to meet all of the swing dancers. It was great fun and we really appreciate the support from RSDN!".

PAST ARTICLE: Dancers Demo!
Swing Dancing A group of 20 Swing dancers went to the Legacy at Cranberry Landing, an assisted living community in Irondequoit, on Saturday February 11 and put on a Swing demo to about 30 residents and staff members. We really enjoyed interacting with the residents, who were very friendly and quite talkative - We had at least ten residents up dancing with us at one time or another. More Big Band music was incorporated into the playlist than ever before and this was probably a reason why the residents enjoyed the experience so much. Without a doubt we were a big hit - got a nice round of applause after each dance. The Legacy's social director said they'd like us back and plans to tell the social directors of the other Legacy communities about us so we will likely be invited to those places as well. - update from Gary Barber. Thanks to Mary Wray & Gary Barber for organizing!

PAST ARTICLE: Dancers Demo!
Swing Dancing A group of about 20 dancers performed a Swing demo to residents, friends, and staff at St. Ann's Home in Irondequoit on January 21, 2012. Judging from the size of the audience, we probably had 40-50 people enjoy the performance. Some of the dancers were able to convince a few of the residents to dance with them, and some of the wheelchair-bound residents had the pleasure of being spun around to the music. We seemed to be a big hit as we heard comments like, "The music was great" and "We'd like you to come back". Next up is a Swing demo at the Legacy Senior Center at Cranberry Landing on Saturday February 11. Thanks to Gary Barber and Mary Wray for organizing.

PAST ARTICLE: Kudos to Dancers!
Swing Dancing From Thompson Health Senior Living, Canandaigua: "Our 3rd Annual Swing Dance was a huge success, both from the standpoint of our residents who had a wonderful time and the standpoint of the Blue Star Mothers, who left with several vans stuffed full of items for our troops and over $400 for postage.
Seems words are not enough to thank you and all of the dancers who came to help make our dance a success! Not only do you all join in with the dancing, but your extra attention and care paid to our residents means more to us and to them than I can express. I was sitting next to one of our wheelchair- bound residents when a dancer approached her and asked her to dance. She responded that she couldn’t dance. He persisted, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her smile so much as when she was twirling around the dance floor. So, thanks!" Please extend our thanks to all who attended. We appreciate it so much. Hope you all had a great time.

PAST ARTICLE: Dancers Demo at the Gables
Swing Dancing Dec 11, 2010 demo at The Gables - From Gary Barber: "We brought a group of 26 dancers, the largest group that we've ever brought to a Swing demo. We were fortunate to have the Johnny Matt Band, a 3-member group that included Jon Seiger. Just like the previous time we were there a few months ago, the dance volunteers also danced with the residents who wanted to join in on the dancing fun. All of the residents enjoyed us - smiles abounded! The group of volunteers that Mary Wray has largely assembled is a wonderful group to bring to these events! Here's who we brought this time: Mary Wray, Vivian Villareale, Jackie Christenson, Patsy Bodie, Krista Cameron, Judi Napurski, Marcia Bickford, Anne Coltre, Lisa Fox, Alla Levi, Cherie Harder, Ida Frost, Meghan MacRae, Wendy Tribelhorn, Roger Fair, Andy Cherre, Mike DuPre', Mark Covert, Tony Pittinaro, Larry Glanville, Dave Earl, Jack Booth, Chuck George, Terry Pitt, Al Hanlon, Gary Barber."

PAST ARTICLE: Dancers Demo at Hurlburt
Swing Dancing Nov 13, 2010 demo at The Hurlbut. From Gary Barber: "a resounding success. Many of the residents have seen us perform the past two years and they were delighted to see us back. When I told them that the social director wants us to return again in the early Spring time frame, they were glad to hear it. Mary Wray and I mixed up the music once again, incorporating some very familiar Big Band music that Amy Alquist suggested. Mary Wray thought dancing to the "Lover's Waltz" for the last song would be a good way to end - the residents obviously loved it because they looked mesmerized with big smiles on their faces." Volunteers were: Mary Wray, Krista Cameron, Jean Sica-Lieber, Lisa Fox, Maureen Magee, Alla Levi, Cherie Harder, Heidi Kraft, Michael Dupre', Terry Pitt, Roger Fair, Mark Covert, DeWitt Cosman, Chuck George, Brian DiNitto, Dave Earl, Robert Loeb, and myself.

Swing Dancing Nov 5, 2010 demo for residents and their family members at Lakeside Beikirch Care Center in Brockport as part of their Family Night activities. From Gary Barber: "It was by far the largest audience we've had - well over 50 people. The residents and family members were sitting at tables in the cafe' and watched our performance after having supper. Lots of photos were taken by Mary Wray and Mike Dupre'(posted on Facebook) as well as by residents' family members and staff. The social director said she heard lots of positive comments about how much they enjoyed us and they want us back! A volunteer staff member at Beikirch in her 70's joined us on the dance floor - the rest of the staff members loved seeing that."
Swing demo volunteers: Mary Wray, Amy Alquist, Mary Graupman, Lisa Fox, Cheryl Challenger, Patsy Brodie, Jackie Christiansen, Marcia Bickford, Mike Dupre', Andy Cherre, Dewitt Cosman, Roger Fair, Jim Johnston, Larry Glanville, Dave Earl, Chuck George, Gary Barber. PAST ARTICLE: Kudos for Dancer Volunteers!
Swing Dancing “This event means so much to our residents, and you and the dancers you organize to attend not only make it happen but make it so very special. Certainly we all enjoy watching you dance – for many of our residents just hearing the music and seeing the dancers makes this a stand-out event. Your group, however, goes a step further and seeks out our residents as dance partners. This provides a chance for them to be a part of the community and to really participate rather than just be a spectator. I can’t even put into words how meaningful this is to our residents and to all of us here at M.M. Ewing. As you are in touch with the dancers, I hope you will share with them how grateful we are for their participation and the caring way they interact with our residents.” Special Events Coordinator, Senior Living Services, Thompson Health, Canandaigua

RSDN Classes - A Student's Comments
Swing Dancing "I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed Swing 1. You are excellent teachers... The pace, breakdown of steps for both leaders & followers, the review of previously learned moves and the building of one move to the next made learning easy & fun. I never felt intimidated and by the end of the 6 sessions felt like I could hold my own! Dancing with different partners really showed the benefits of dancing with a clear leader - it made following so much easier. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience. It provided me with the opportunity to learn something I had always wanted to learn and come away with something I will be able to use and enjoy for many years to come. I look forward to hearing about future class schedules and dances. I do intend to use it so that I don't lose it."

A Dancer on Dancing...
Swing Dancing A fellow dancer has shared thoughts on dancing: "... it struck me that many people on the dance floor had regained something we seem to loose about the age of ten: the ability to play without fear of looking silly. It's almost ironic - many people, myself included, start taking classes so they don't "feel foolish" trying to dance. But when I take the time to just sit and watch the dancers, there's a lot of "foolish" stuff going on, and the people involved are invariably the ones with the biggest grins on their faces. That reminds me of Richard's final advice at the end of Swing 4, "Now that you know how to dance, forget everything we taught you and just get out there and have fun." So much of adult "play" is geared toward activities where a score keeps track of "winners" and "losers." Your approach to dance instruction, with an emphasis on social dancing and having fun, makes it accessible for people who don't have the skills, resources, or inclination to compete - or the athleticism. When the only score that counts is the grin factor, the encouragement you give to your students to get out there and play with the moves and the music is the best instruction available anywhere."

Dance Classes - a student's comments...
Swing Dancing I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed Swing 1.

RSDN - The Best! Thanks, CITY...
Swing Dancing RSDN has been chosen "BEST DANCE INSTRUCTORS" by CITY Newspaper in its 2004 annual "Best of Rochester" section: "Swing and salsa and waltz and zydeco do mean a thing to hundreds of Rochesterians who attend weekly and monthly dances. Chances are these dancers have been taught how to lead, follow and dip by Esther Brill & Richard Newman or Antoinette Giancursio. Esther & Richard, founders of the Rochester Swing Dance Network, have been teaching dance for over a decade, passing on what they have learned from international masters, such as the ageless Frankie Manning, one of the founding fathers of Lindy Hop, a swing dance that he and his pals originated in the '30s in Harlem's Savoy Ballroom.

Welcome to the new website!
Swing Dancing With the new year, Rochester Swing Dance Network is introducing a new website. We hope it will provide an organized and updated look to our system as well as make it easier for you to find information on swing dancing in Rochester. This site will continue to grow and offer new features, so check back often to see what's developing!

To browse the site and learn more, use the menu to the left. All upcoming RSDN-sponsored events can be found by clicking on "Dances", "Classes", and "Workshops". The "Calendar" will list all RSDN and community events (as we learn about them) on a month-by-month basis. You can also read about RSDN and its people by clicking on "History" or "Contact", and use the ever-growing "Links" section to find more information out on the web.

If you are new to RSDN, please see the "Rochester Info" section for information on local bands and locations (including web links and maps). And our out of town guests will be interested in the "Restaurants" link for a guide to eateries and accommodations across the city.

Have fun! If you have any questions about the site (or any RSDN information), please click on the "Contact" link and direct your comments to the appropriate people.
